Weekend Box Office Breakdown: 7/14/2017 – 7/16/2017

Here we are again at the end of yet another weekend and with it comes another set of Weekend Box Office Estimates courtesy of BoxOfficeMojo.com! As always here are the numbers:

  1. War for the Planet of the Apes – $56.500,000 – New Release
  2. Spider-Man: Homecoming – $45,200,000 – 61.4$ Drop
  3. Despicable Me 3 – $18,947,840 – 43.6% Drop
  4. Baby Driver – $8,750,000 – 32.7% Drop
  5. The Big Sick – $7,600,000 – 112.5% Jump

So the top story here has to be the match up of War for the Planet of the Apes versus Spider-Man: Homecoming. I honestly expected the numbers for these two movies to be flipped with Spider-Man: Homecoming being the top earner in it’s second week and War for the Planet of the Apes debuting at #2, I was even having a lengthy conversation about it with a friend Friday morning.  Given the amazing reviews that both movies are getting (you can read mine here and here), I figured that the difference in box office takes would be decided by fan base with Spider-Man: Homecoming coming out on top due to it’s connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fact that Robert Downey Jr. shows up as Iron Man and was heavily featured in the trailers.  I guess I underestimated people’s fatigue with the Spider-Man character (6 movies in 15 years is a lot) and also grossly underestimated how much people have gravitated towards the new Planet of the Apes franchise.  I personally love it, after skipping Rise of the Planet of the Apes in theaters, I made damn sure to go see both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes in theaters and was absolutely rewarded for that choice. While I wish Spider-Man: Homecoming would have taken less of a drop from it’s first to second week, I love that War for the Planet of the Apes took the number one spot as it is a fantastic film that caps off a fantastic trilogy.

A 43.6% drop seems about on par, if not a bit low for Despicable Me 3 so I think that particular entry on this weeks Top 5 is kind of a “non-story” but there’s fun stuff to talk about in the #4 and #5 slots. I am so so happy that Baby Driver is hanging around the Top 5 and is close to breaking $100 million, it’s an amazing original movie that I absolutely loved (my review for it can be found here). If you haven’t had a chance to go see Baby Driver, take some time and go see it.  For the #5 slot this week we have a WildeBeard Reviews Weekend Box Office Breakdown first – a movie making it’s way into the Top 5 by jumping up from the lower ranks! And it couldn’t have happened to a better movie (from what I hear anyway).  The Big Sick looks like one of the best romantic comedies to grace movie screens in years and I can’t wait to see it.  The Big Sick has been getting incredible reviews (already landing on a lot of peoples Best of the Year list) and it has finally been put into wide release, being added to 2,271 screens this past weekend. Seems like good word of mouth and people being able to find showings near them have propelled this movie from the #8 to the #5 spot.

Next week will be very interesting in the Top 5 as Valerian and the City of a Thousand PlanetsDunkirk, and Girls Trip all release next weekend! I’m thinking it will be a tight race between Valerian and Dunkirk for the #1 spot next week!
