Weekend Box Office Breakdown – May 5th – 7th

Howdy Beardlings and welcome back to WildeBeard reviews where we are back at it after a week off and ready to dig into some box office numbers!  From the looks of things, not much has changed since our last weekend box office breakdown.

Let’s get into it!

#1 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – $146,510,104 – New Release

Well Marvel and Disney have another smash hit on their hands and is it honestly that surprising?  At this point I’d be shocked if each successive Marvel movie DOESN’T make over $100 million opening weekend. I have not yet had a chance to go and check out the newest adventure of Star Lord and Co but I very much look forward to doing so as everything I’ve heard about it has been overwhelmingly positive.

#2 – The Fate of the Furious – $8,577,175 – 57% Drop

Hanging on to the #2 spot is the newest entry in another reliable money making franchise, “The Fate of the Furious”.  Now this one, I have had the pleasure of seeing and while it may not quite be the movie I would enjoy seeing all the time, it was damned fun and I definitely recommend it to people as a fun, popcorn movie, summer blockbuster. Also during our week off, “Fate” sneaked into that exclusive billion dollar club as it currently sits at $1,162,229,939.  It’s a pretty safe bet Fast 9 isn’t too far away.

#3 – The Boss Baby – $5,976,818 – 36.2% Drop

I gotta tell ya, I don’t have a lot left to say about this movie.  It shocked me when it came out, it has shocked me week after week as it continues to make money hand over fist, and it shocks me that it is still hanging around the Top 5 in it’s 6th week of release.  It will be interesting to see how much longer it sticks in the Top 5 as we get deeper and deeper in to the summer movie season.

#4 – How to be a Latin Lover – $5,144,904 – 58.0% Drop

Being painfully honest again, I hadn’t even heard of this movie until it popped on the Top 5 last weekend taking in a startling $12.25 million on just 1,118 screens.  I haven’t even seen a trailer for this film much less know what it’s about past guessing based on the title.  It took a pretty significant drop from its first to second week and, just like “Boss Baby”, I doubt it will hang around the Top 5 for too long as this weekend kicks off a series of a new blockbuster every weekend for the next two months or more.

#5 – Beauty and the Beast – $5,087,749 – 25.5% Drop

For Belle and Co, at least it’s not as lonely in the billion dollar club as it was there for a while.  “Beauty and the Beast” has a global total of $1,182,029,848 which “Fate” is closing in on pretty quick.  The real question here is, does the latest from the House of Mouse have the stamina to outlast “Fate” as it flames out or will Dom and the crew be too much for the tale as old as time?  My money is on Disney winning the day, as per usual.

That’s it for this week folks!  Come back Friday morning for the next entry in the Weekend Box Office Prediction series as we try to guess if “Guardians” can fend off Excalibur and Charlie Hunnam in “King Arthur” to keep the top spot!

Until next time, Thank You for reading and….

SEE YOU AT THE CINEMA!
